Autumn is one of the key periods for the window and door joinery industry. Investors want to complete crucial stages of construction before winter arrives, owners of older buildings start looking for ways to reduce heat loss, and contractors aim to make the most of the final months with favourable conditions for installation work.
Autumn 2026 in the window industry - what can we expect?
In 2026, the situation is particularly interesting. The European construction market is emerging from a period of slowdown, although the pace of recovery remains uneven. EUROCONSTRUCT*, which analyses 19 European construction markets, forecasts a further recovery in the window and door sector, although slower than expected at the end of 2025.
*EUROCONSTRUCT - an international network of independent research institutes specialising in forecasting the European construction market.
In the first quarter of 2026, many projects across Europe were put on hold or postponed, mainly due to weather conditions. Fortunately, the situation began to improve in the second quarter and most investment decisions were reactivated. This will have an impact on this autumn. Some projects that could not be started or completed earlier may move into the implementation phase in the second half of the year.
Autumn may therefore bring more sales opportunities, but it is unlikely to mean a sudden “boom” in windows and doors. A gradual improvement in market conditions is a much more likely scenario.
European construction is slowly recovering
The situation in the window industry should, however, be analysed in the broader context of construction. Window and door joinery depends directly on both new residential developments and the renovation and energy-efficiency improvement market.
According to the EUROCONSTRUCT forecast mentioned above, European construction output was virtually stagnant in 2025. Growth amounted to just 0.2%, following two previous years of decline. In 2026, the market is expected to return to growth, although conditions vary considerably from country to country.
Research also indicates that, over the 2026-2028 period, Ireland, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom are among the markets with the strongest growth prospects, while conditions in some other European economies remain considerably more difficult.
This means that autumn 2026 may look completely different depending on the country. Rather than speaking of a single European window market, we can increasingly distinguish between markets recovering more quickly and those where demand will take longer to rebuild.

Which window trends will shape this autumn?
In 2026, the importance of energy efficiency is particularly important, but it is not the only trend that will shape the market in the coming months.
Energy efficiency remains the top priority
The window industry is supported by a very strong long-term trend: improving the energy efficiency of European buildings. Growing energy awareness means that customers increasingly ask not only about the price or colour of a window, but also about the Uw thermal transmittance, the type of insulating glass unit, warm-edge spacers and solutions designed to reduce thermal bridging.

A window is no longer just a frame and glass
In autumn 2026, the trend towards comprehensive solutions will continue to grow. Customers increasingly want to order not only windows from one supplier, but also external roller shutters, insect screens, entrance doors and garage doors. This approach offers many advantages: individual elements can be coordinated both technically and visually, while the investor does not have to coordinate several different contractors.
External roller shutters integrated with the window are attracting particular interest. In autumn and winter, they provide an additional barrier between the interior and harsh weather conditions, while in summer they help reduce excessive heat gain indoors. Automation is also becoming increasingly important, with roller shutters controlled by remote control, an app or a smart-home system.

Summary
Data from the first half of the year provide grounds for cautious optimism. This does not, however, mean a return to a period of rapid growth in window and door sales. The European market remains highly diverse, and customers continue to make investment decisions cautiously.
One point seems particularly important: a window is no longer treated as a standalone product, but increasingly as part of a complete system that improves the comfort, appearance and energy efficiency of the home.
And this is exactly what Aikon Distribution offers: complete window and door joinery from a single supplier. Contact us for professional advice and a free quotation for your project.
