Windows for energy-efficient homes

Energy-efficient houses are the future of construction, both because of rising energy costs and environmental concerns. Choosing the right windows for such a building is a key step that affects the comfort of the occupants, the energy efficiency of the house and its market value.

Why are windows important in an energy-efficient home?

Windows are one of the most important elements in the energy balance of a building. Up to 25 per cent of heat can escape through the windows, so the right choice of window frames is crucial.

In energy-efficient houses, window parameters such as:

  • Heat Transfer Coefficient (Uw) - determines how much heat escapes through the window. The lower the Uw value, the better.
  • Window tightness – prevents uncontrolled air flow.
  • Sound insulation –particularly important in buildings near busy roads or airports.

What to consider when choosing windows for an energy-efficient home?

1. Technical parameters of energy-efficient windows

When choosing windows for an energy-efficient home, the technical parameters are key:

  • Uw coefficient: It is recommended to choose windows with a Uw value below 0.9 W/m²K. The lower the Uw value, the better the thermal insulation, which means less energy loss. It is worth noting that the Uw coefficient applies to the entire window, not just the glass, so choose products with appropriately optimised frame profiles and glazing packages.
  • Low-E glazing: Thanks to their heat-reflective coating, they minimise energy losses.
  • Multi-chamber profiles: Modern profiles with a larger number of chambers provide better thermal insulation.

2. Type of glazing

Triple-glazed or quad-glazed windows are the standard in energy-efficient homes. They reduce heat loss and improve sound insulation. It is also worth paying attention to the g-factor, which determines how much solar energy penetrates the glass. In temperate climates, high g-values can help to reheat rooms in winter.

3. Window materials and aesthetics

Energy-efficient houses use PVC, timber or aluminium windows. The choice depends on the investor's preferences and budget:

  • PCV – durable, easy to maintain, available in a variety of colours.
  • Wood - natural and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Aluminium - modern, elegant, perfect for large glazing.

Additional solutions increasing energy efficiency of windows

1. External roller shutters and external venetian blinds

These elements help to regulate the temperature inside the building, protecting against excessive heat in summer and heat loss in winter.

2. Intelligent control systems (smart home)

Controlling roller shutters, window opening or shading via a mobile app increases user convenience and allows better energy management.
