IO-HOMECONTROL – your home under control

IO-HOMECONTROL – your home under control

blog | 28.10.2026

You lower the roller shutters before going to bed, open the garage in the morning and close the entrance gate as you leave. You repeat the same tasks every day, often in a hurry. But what if you could do all this more conveniently? Using a remote control or your smartphone?

That is exactly what io-homecontrol is designed for. This technology allows suitably equipped roller shutters, gates and even door locks to be operated within a single system. Find out how you can use this technology in your home.

What Is io-homecontrol?

Let's start by explaining what io-homecontrol actually is. Simply put, it is a common language that allows devices around your home to communicate with each other. You press a button, and a command is transmitted by radio signal to the roller shutter or gate motor. There is no need to approach each device individually to operate it.

Importantly, communication works in both directions. A device can receive a command and send information about its current status back to the control system. With a suitable controller, you can therefore check whether a roller shutter has been lowered or a gate has been closed. The information available depends on the specific equipment.

io-homecontrol itself is not an app. Smartphone operation requires a compatible smart home hub, such as Somfy TaHoma.

More convenient external roller shutters

External roller shutters help control the amount of daylight entering your home, provide privacy and enhance security. With io-compatible motors, operating them every day becomes much easier.
You can raise an individual shutter, control all the shutters in a particular room or lower several at the same time. This is particularly useful in homes with multiple windows.

How does it work in practice?

In the evening, a single command can close the roller shutters in your living room and bedrooms. During the day, you can adjust them to reduce harsh sunlight falling on your television or desk.

You do not have to darken the room completely. A suitable motor allows you to stop the shutter at your preferred height.

The control system can also be adapted to the layout of your home. Roller shutters facing the garden can form one group, while those in the bedrooms form another.
This allows you to cover only the windows you need without changing the settings in other rooms. It is also useful when some members of the household still want to enjoy daylight while others are getting ready to rest.

With a compatible sunlight sensor and configured automation, your shutters can also respond to sunlight while you are away.

In summer, this can help reduce indoor overheating. In winter, the settings can be adjusted to make better use of natural daylight. The actual effect depends on the building, the type of shutters and how they are used.

Open your garage door without leaving your car

It’s raining, you’re coming home with shopping, or you’re taking the children to school. A garage door equipped with a compatible io motor allows you to enter and leave your garage conveniently without having to open the door manually. For everyday operation, you can use a remote control or, when connected to a suitable smart home hub, a smartphone app.

Another particularly useful feature is the ability to check the garage door's status.
If you’re wondering whether you closed the garage after leaving, a suitably equipped system can let you check remotely. If necessary, you can send a closing command and check the result. When choosing a motor, it is essential to ensure that it is suitable for the garage door's construction, dimensions and weight.

The features of the specific model are also important, including obstacle detection, compatibility with safety photocells, soft-stop functionality and garage lighting. These features are not automatically guaranteed simply because a product carries the io designation.

Convenient access through your entrance gate

io-homecontrol technology can also make accessing your property more convenient, starting right at the entrance gate. The main application is an entrance gate equipped with a compatible motor. A suitable system allows you to open the gate using a remote control or, when integrated with a smart home hub, your smartphone.

Your entrance gate and garage door can be operated using a single compatible remote control.

This means you don’t need separate remotes for the entrance gate and the garage.
With the right equipment, you can also use an app to check whether the entrance gate is closed. When planning your entrance gate installation, remember to allow space for the motor, electrical connections and any necessary accessories.
Safety photocells, a warning light and driveway lighting can all contribute to a functional and convenient entrance area.

If you also want to release a pedestrian gate remotely, you will need to check the compatibility of its lock or electric strike and the relevant controller separately.

Can entrance doors also use io-homecontrol?

Yes, entrance doors can be integrated into an io-homecontrol system, provided they are equipped with a compatible electric lock and a suitable controller. Depending on the lock, io-homecontrol can allow you to unlock or lock the door using a compatible remote control, keypad or smartphone app.

However, this solution applies exclusively to operating the lock. Simply adding a controller does not mean that the door leaf will automatically open and close. This type of movement would require a separate, appropriately selected door operator.

Scenarios tailored to your daily routine

The greatest convenience comes from combining everyday tasks into automated scenarios. Instead of operating each device separately, you can activate a predefined sequence of actions. A compatible smart home hub also allows you to create schedules tailored to your working hours and household routines. A "Day" scenario could raise the roller shutters in the kitchen and living room at a selected time. A "Night" scenario could lower the shutters in the rooms you want to cover before going to bed. At weekends, the bedroom shutters could open later, allowing you to enjoy a longer rest. You can also create an "Coming Home" scenario, activated with a single command. With compatible equipment, it could open selected gates and switch on the driveway lighting. An "I'm Leaving" scenario, on the other hand, could lower selected roller shutters.

Door lock operation can also be included in automated scenarios if the chosen equipment supports this function.
The available actions always depend on the devices and system configuration.

Stay in control even when you're away

Remote control operation works locally and does not require an internet connection. However, controlling your devices through an app while away from home requires a suitable smart home hub and an active internet connection. This allows you to check your roller shutters and gates while you are at work or travelling.

Status feedback helps reduce uncertainty after sending a command. Instead of simply assuming that a device has responded, you can check its status through a compatible control system that supports this function. This is particularly useful when leaving home every day or going away for a longer period.

Plan your home automation from the start

If you are planning to purchase roller shutters, entrance doors, a garage door or fencing with an entrance gate, it is worth considering how you want to operate them from the outset.

You can start with a remote control and later expand your compatible system with a smart home hub and additional features.

You can automate everything at once, but you do not have to. Make a list of the devices you want to control and consider which ones should work together. Your automation system should fit your daily habits.

Ask about motor and controller compatibility, power supply requirements and the information available through the app. By choosing products that can operate within a shared system, you can make your home easier and more convenient to use in the future.

A well-planned io-homecontrol system means fewer repetitive tasks and more convenient control over your roller shutters, garage and access to your property.
