Painting timber windows

Painting timber windows is, on the one hand, a necessity and on the other, an option. Necessity, because taking care of a timber window is a guarantee of its longer life. Possibility, because we can freely change their appearance by choosing different paint colours. Painting timber windows is not difficult, we can do it ourselves, without the help of a professional. However, you should remember that this type of work should be carried out in suitable environmental conditions - it's important to provide the painted coatings with optimal conditions for drying. How to paint timber windows? Ideally, the air temperature should then be between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius and the humidity should not exceed 80%. Preparation for painting timber windows is as important as the actual part of the process. Remember to carefully protect the area around the window from dust and other dirt. Move all furniture, objects and plants which are in close proximity to the window, as they could also be damaged. It is best to cover the window sill with foil or cardboard and fix it with painter's tape. Tape is also useful for taping the edges of glass and the contact point between the window frame and the wall.

Best paint for timber windows

The best paint for timber windows is able to completely cover the wood grain, so if you are planning to radically change the look of your home - both inside and out - this product will be a good solution. The offer includes very typical colours, close to the natural shade of wood, as well as non-standard colours, e.g. red or blue, with which you can definitely change your home. Semi-transparent stain or varnish are alternatives for those who want to stick to naturalness and emphasise the grain. At the same time, such products have the same wood impregnating and preserving properties as paints. Regardless of what you choose, it's worth paying attention to fast-drying and low-odour preparations - not only will they speed up the process of painting timber windows, but they won't bother you because of their too intensive smell.

How to paint timber windows?

Painting timber windows prolongs their life and makes even very old window frames look new again. It allows you to keep the perfect look of your windows and protects them from damage.

Step 1. The timber window frame should be thoroughly cleaned with a brush to remove dust and dirt. This is very important. Skipping this step may result in the paint not covering the surface of the window frame thoroughly.

Step 2. Sand the wood with sandpaper to remove the previous coat of paint. Start with coarse-grained paper and gradually move on to finer-grained paper. Finally, remove any dust from the surface and wipe off with a damp cloth.

Step 3. Protection of glass, hinges and handles with painters' tape and foil.

Step 4. Fill losses that sandpaper cannot cope with. A special wood filler will come in useful for this.

Step 5. Apply an impregnating primer to all timber elements. The preparation will protect the wood against weather conditions. This is the stage immediately preceding the painting of timber windows.

Step 6. After the primer has dried, the main part of the work follows, i.e. painting of the timber windows. It is best to apply 2 coats of paint along the grain, at intervals of at least 4 hours.

How to care for timber windows?

Choosing timber windows, we undoubtedly have a guarantee that they will be a decoration of the whole house. However, we should remember that if we want them to serve us longer, we must take care of them. It is important to protect them from dampness, as this may cause them to swell and lose their original size. In the long run, this will result in difficulties with opening and closing windows, rising heating bills and a feeling of draughts due to increasingly leaky windows.

Summary for painting timber windows

Currently manufactured timber windows are much more durable than those manufactured a few decades ago. Timber windows available on the market are made of dried and impregnated wood, thanks to which they show high resistance to weather conditions and do not need to be painted every few years. However, do not lose vigilance and regularly check the condition of your windows. If they are located on facades exposed to strong sunlight or heavy rainfall, they may need to be painted every 5-8 years. However, much depends on the type of wood, so it is difficult to clearly define how often to paint timber windows.
