PVC windows are practical and relatively inexpensive. So it is hardly surprising how many homes they are found in. Window frames made of PVC are prone to slight discolouration due to UV radiation. This type of transformation is unlikely to be pleasing to the eye. Profiles can yellow or discolour in various ways. But have you thought about painting a plastic window? There are special preparations for painting plastics, which means that the renovation of PVC windows is quite feasible. So: how do you paint PVC windows? Let's find out!

Can you paint PVC window frames?

Can PVC window frames be painted? The answer is a resounding YES! Painting PVC windows is a renovation that can give very good results. However, satisfactory results will be achieved by using a specially designed paint for painting plastic windows. This is a product with excellent adhesion to smooth and hard plastic surfaces. Thanks to this, painting plastic windows is not difficult, what is more, it gives an effect that is visually attractive. Thus, a properly selected paint will ensure easy painting and long-lasting results.

You should choose a product that is weatherproof to refresh your windows both on the outside and the inside. A good solution will be acrylic paint for PVC windows, which is water-based and does not emit any toxic substances. Maximum durability and weather resistance is provided by an alkyd enamel designed for PVC joinery. The resulting effect will certainly not disappoint you!

How to paint PVC window frames?

Painting uPVC windows has to start with... checking the weather forecast! Not every day is suitable for this type of work. The ideal conditions for this are a temperature between 10-25 degrees Celsius and a humidity of no more than 80%. If you undertake work under other conditions, there is a very high probability that the primer and enamel will not spread properly or will start to peel.

Painting PVC windows is a succession of steps. Maintaining the sequence of work reduces the risk of mistakes to an absolute minimum. The optimum plan of action is as follows:

  1. cleaning and degreasing the windows (both the hardware and the glass pane). For this you can use a simple detergent or a professional product. To ensure that deep discolouration is removed, it is best to use a solvent suitable for this type of product.
  2. covering the window and adjacent walls with tape and painter's film. It is also worth protecting the window sill - the stains that can occur when painting PVC frames can be very difficult to remove
  3. to assemble the necessary equipment and products, i.e. mixed paint, a flat brush and a paint roller. Paint can also be applied by spraying, but this is a more demanding method and is more a task for an expert.
  4. applying the primer and paint - these should be done quickly and steadily, always painting in one direction, i.e. from right to left or left to right. Why? Painting with a brush one way and then the other will certainly not give a satisfactory result. In most cases, two coats of paint should be applied, in which case the work should be repeated 4-5 hours after the first coat.

Painting PVC window frames - a professional service or a do-it-yourself job?

Painting PVC windows is not a complicated job, but it does require patience and precision. Anyone can attempt such a job - but the result will depend on their skills. Mistakes made during paint application are usually very visible. What's more, problems can also arise if the surface has been poorly cleaned - dust or greasy contaminants can make the preparation not stick to the painted area. This gives rise to problems with paint flaking, unevenness, etc.

The safest thing to do is to use professionals. Then, as a customer, you can be sure that the work will be done correctly and that any mistakes will be covered by the service guarantee. This solution can also give you more satisfaction than seeing your own painting results.

Painting windows is a much cheaper solution than replacing them with new ones. In the event that the biggest problem of these construction elements is the colour, an unsightly appearance then it is best to opt for painting the frames. The result will be just as satisfying and, at the same time, much less of a strain on the budget.
